Austin audiences will have the unique opportunity to hear KANTELE a living legend of Karelian-Finnish epic poem Kalevala which inspired J.R.R Tolkien for creating his The Lord of the Rings!

Participants: Duet Kandeleh Viktoria Nizhnik and Yakov Nizhnik, and the guest artist Alena Bystritskiy (Classical harp).

About the Artists:
Viktoria Nizhnik ethnic Livvi-Karelian, laureate of International Andreev Competition, graduate of Petrozavodsk State Conservatory (Karelia, Russia), and a former soloist of State National Ensemble of Republic of Karelia Kantele (Petrozavodsk, Karelia, Russia). She truly masterfully plays Karelian chromatic kantele, diatonic folk kantele, and jouhikko.

Yakov Nizhnik graduate of Petrozavodsk State University (Karelia, Russia), received his PhD in Organic Chemistry in St.-Petersburg Institute of Technology (Russia), a professional chemist and musician amateur. He plays classical guitar and diatonic folk kantele. Besides chemistry and folk music he adores music of Richard Wagner, L. van Beethoven, G. Verdi, J.S. Bach, A. Schnittke, and King Crimson.

Alena Bystritskiy (Classical harp) studied harp with a Professor Marion Hofmann at the Rostock University of Music and Theater (Germany). She is a winner of a major international harp competitions:Verband der Harfenisten in Deutschland e.V (2007), Franz Reinl (2007); and Deutsche Bahn (2005). Alena Bystritskiy played with orchestras: Berliner Symphoniker, RBB Symphony, North German Philharmonic, Neubrandenburg Philharmonic and Goettingen Symphony.

"As you can guess from his name, Mr. Gryaznov is Russian. A couple of years ago, I accidentally stumbled upon his performance on Youtube and was absolutely charmed. It was his concert arrangement of Rachmaninovs Italian Polka. I loved it so much I listened to it three times in a row. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmSDDslA__M Then, I found his performances of Rachmaninov, Chopin, and Schubert, and loved everything. To make long story short, two years later the stars aligned and Mr. Gryaznov (we call him Slava) is coming to play a solo recital for us. Please come! It is going to be a treat!
